Broadcasters' association unveils 1999 Gold Ribbon finalists

Ottawa, September 10, 1999 - Eighteen radio stations, 14 television stations and five specialty channels are in the running for private broadcasting's prestigious Gold Ribbons for best news, programming and public service projects of the year, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) announced today.

Submissions range from outstanding coverage of the devastating “Ice Storm `98” and healthcare reform, to in-depth specials on native land treaties, cancer, and Canada's distinguished athletes and artists.

Entries were described by the group of 14 judges, as eclectic and diverse, demonstrating great innovation and creativity in Canadian programming. Judges particularly noted the level of commitment of private broadcasters to their communities and to showcasing Canada's melting pot of talent.

Winners will be announced at the Gold Ribbon gala on November 2nd during Broadcasting `99, the CAB Convention in Montréal.

Stations across the country submitted a total of 167 entries. News was the most popular TV category with 31 entries, while Community Service attracted the most radio entries with 20.

CFTM-TV, Montréal is the lead television contender, with six shots at gold. BCTV, Vancouver and CKAL-TV Calgary, each have three. Leading the Specialty and Pay services category is MuchMusic, with three entries in the running.

On the radio front, CKXR, Salmon Arm, and CFRA, Ottawa are tied with three chances for gold, followed by CFOX-FM, Vancouver, CHUM-FM, Toronto, CKAC, Montréal, and CKMF, Montréal, with two each.

Gold Ribbons will also be awarded to individuals for Broadcast Excellence and outstanding Community Service.

Television judges: Mme Renée-Claude Ménard (CHAIR), Groupe TVA Inc., (CFTM-TV), Montréal; Mr. Paul Burke, CHEX-TV, Peterborough; Ms Jodi Craig, A-Channel, Calgary; Ms Sarah Crawford, MuchMusic, Toronto; Mr. Rick Friesen, CIHF-TV, Dartmouth; Ms Lois Jones, CTV Television Inc., (CJOH-TV), Ottawa; Mr. Delano Jureidini, CF Television Inc. (CFCF-TV), Montréal; Mme Véronique Lussier, Le Canal Nouvelles, Montréal.

Radio judges: Mr. Gary Evong (CHAIR), NewCap Inc., (CFDR/CFRQ-FM), Halifax; Ms Tricia Freriks, CFPL Radio, London; Mr. Steve Hayes, CJMF FM, Québec; Ms Gina McBeth, Sun-FM and The Bullet, Kelowna; Ms C.G. O'Brien, 1050 CHUM, Toronto; Mr. Luc Tremblay, CKMF-FM, Montréal.

To ensure impartiality, judges abstain from voting when an entry from their station(s) or parent company is being considered.

The CAB represents the vast majority of Canada's private radio, television and specialty services.
