CAB HONOURS PETER M. LIBA WITH SPECIAL
GOLD RIBBON AWARD
Ottawa, May 14, 1999 -- The Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB)
has honoured Peter M. Liba, newly installed Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba,
with a special Gold Ribbon Award to commemorate his appointment and acknowledge
his outstanding contribution to the Canadian private broadcasting industry
and to Canada. Mr. Liba has held a host of senior positions with the CanWest
Global Communications Corp. from its beginnings in 1974. Just prior to
his appointment, he was Executive Director, Corporate Affairs.
It enhances one's faith in our political system when a man of
Peter's calibre and accomplishments is put in charge of one of our country's
high profile public institutions, said Andrée Wylie, CRTC
Vice-Chair of Broadcasting.
The ceremony was held on Wednesday, May 12th at a special reception
on Parliament Hill, in conjunction with the CAB's Board of Directors'
meetings. Industry executives from Canada's public and private broadcasting
sectors were in attendance, as were MPs, senators and members of the diplomatic
corps.
Peter will carry his office with vision, intelligence, caring
and humility, said Jim Sward, president and CEO of the Global Television
Network. This is another chapter in a wonderful story...about impossible
dreams of a working class kid becoming a reality.
Michael McCabe, president of the CAB, read tributes to Peter Liba from
Governor General Roméo Leblanc, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien
and Heritage Minister Sheila Copps.
My broadcasting career brought me much satisfaction, said
Peter Liba, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. One of the most important
things it taught me was that broadcasters across the country are committed
to making their communities better places to live in.
