Government honors
broadcasters for anti-violence campaign
EDMONTON, October
28, 1996 - Private radio and television broadcasters today were honored
with a Certificate of Recognition from the Government of Canada for their
key role in the widely acclaimed 1996 national public service campaign,
'Violence: You Can Make a Difference'.
Canadian Heritage
Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Sheila Copps made the surprise presentation
to Michael McCabe, President & CEO of the Canadian Association of
Broadcasters (CAB), following her speech at the CAB convention, in Edmonton.
Sharing in the presentation were CAB Radio Board Chair Tony Viner and
TV Board Vice-Chair Charles Bélanger.
"I know all our
members will be honored and flattered by this thoughtful gesture,"
said McCabe. "Broadcasters have a deep, natural and ongoing commitment
to keeping their communities safe and this special recognition can only
strengthen that resolve." He noted many stations supplement the national
campaign with local talk shows, interviews, and special programs and projects
dealing with violence in society.
Initiated by the CAB
and currently aired on hundreds of private stations across Canada, the
anti-violence campaign was launched by Copps in late March, before a large
Ottawa crowd of MPs, CRTC representatives, community leaders and media
groups.
Canadian Heritage
is one of seven federal partners in the year long campaign. Said McCabe:
"I think our successful partnership with government departments on
this important issue is an ideal example of industry and government working
effectively together for the benefit of society."
This year's dramatic
radio and television spots revolve around the themes of Violence Against
women, Violence Against Children and Media Literacy and feature printed
'tips' that expand on the spots. Broadcasters have so far pledged over
$8 million in air time to the campaign.
