Edmonton site of Canadian broadcasting spectacular

OTTAWA, October 21, 1996 - An estimated 1,000 radio and television station owners, CEOs, engineers, and news specialists will converge on Edmonton, October 27-29, for the most extensive broadcasting gathering and Media Expo in Canadian history.

Built around the theme 'Creating the Future Together', Broadcasting '96 combines the concurrent conventions of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB), Radio Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) and Western Association of Broadcast Engineers (WABE).

Powerful speakers

Headliners include Heritage Minister Sheila Copps, new CRTC head Françoise Bertrand, futurist Frank Feather, Alberta Premier Ralph Klein, CBC President Perrin Beatty, and industry leaders Ted Rogers, I.H. Asper, John Cassaday and Michael McCabe.

Broadcasting '96 spotlights the marvels of the digital revolution and showcases broadcasters' drive to bring viewers $500,000,000 in new top quality Canadian shows they'll want to watch.

Hard hitting sessions

Sizzling sessions and workshops tackle broadcasters' new relationship with the music industry, what's hot on the Internet, the future of advertising, and 'Smashing the Glass Ceiling: What's in it for Broadcasters?'

Other panels debate convergence, violence classification, digital radio's roll-out, Canadian programming, and 'The Future of Syndication and Network Talk'.

Moderators include CTV's Craig Oliver and Valerie Pringle, Global's Peter Kent, BCTV's Tony Parsons, and CKNW open line host, Bill Good.

Superb entertainment

Social highlights feature the toe-tapping 'Wild West Alberta Dust Up in Denim' opening party, the Hall of Fame Luncheon, the sparkling Gold Ribbon Awards Gala, and RTNDA's Foundation Auction.

The sold out Media Expo, with over 115 exhibits, features all the latest broadcast equipment and services, including the DAB virtual receiver being used for consumer research.
