CTV's Lloyd Robertson wins broadcasting's top award
OTTAWA, February 21, 1996 -- Ace CTV news anchor Lloyd Robertson, for
many years voted 'most trusted TV journalist' by TV Guide readers, has
won private broadcasting's 1996 Gold Ribbon Award for Broadcast Excellence.
Honoring 'truly outstanding service to Canadian private broadcasting',
the prestigious award will be presented at the first Annual Broadcast
Excellence Dinner, May 15, 1996, Chateau Laurier Hotel, Ottawa.
Hosted by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB), the gala event
will celebrate Robertson's remarkable 44 years in radio and television,
highlighted by a video presentation of career milestones and achievements.
A certain sell-out, the dinner is shaping up as Ottawa's major social
event of the spring season. In attendance will be prominent politicians
and regulators, senior government officials, leading broadcasters, and
many on-air personalities.
One of Canada's most recognized and respected news anchors, Robertson
symbolizes the overall excellence of Canadian broadcasting and private
broadcasters' role as producers of programming people want to watch and
listen to.
The Gold Ribbon Award for Broadcast Excellence recognizes such qualities
as the 'unselfish giving of skills, time and advice' and 'dedication and
hard work that ... reflects a genuine concern for the highest broadcasting
standards'.
While best known as chief anchor of highly-rated CTV television news,
Robertson began his broadcasting career in 1952 at his hometown radio
station, CJCS, Stratford and joined CJOY, Guelph the next year. Since
1992, on top of his TV duties, he has anchored the popular prime time
'CTV Radio News' on more than 120 stations.
Robertson anchored CBC's 'The National' from 1970 to 1976 before moving
to CTV to host the 'CTV National News' with Harvey Kirck. He became Chief
News Anchor and Senior News Editor in 1983. .
His impressive list of television credits include hosting his own specials
on Hong Kong, China and Great Britain and covering nine Olympic games.
He has anchored CTV for the Gulf War, Royal weddings, Papal visits, state
funerals and many elections, referendums and leadership races. He co-anchored
CFTO, Toronto's 'Hospital for Sick Children Telethon' for 11 years.
Career highlights include: The 1993 Radio Television News Directors
Association's President's Award; six Gemini nominations, with wins in
1992 and 1994 as 'Best Anchor/Interviewer'; 'Favorite TV Anchor' in NOW
magazine's first poll; Toronto Sun's 1994 Reader's Voice Award for 'Favorite
TV Anchor'; Central Canada Broadcasters' Association 1992 'Broadcaster
of the Year'; nine times TV Guide magazine's 'Most Trusted TV Journalist'.
The CAB Gold Ribbon for Broadcast Excellence has been awarded since
1982. Previous winners: Ted Rogers; Allan Waters; I. H. Asper; Elmer Hildebrand;
Dr. Charles Allard; Henri Audet; Phyllis Switzer; Donald Brinton; Murray
Chercover; Bill Hawkins; James Sward; Fred Sherratt; John Ansell; and
