Private broadcasters win 22 medals in world competition

OTTAWA, June 26, 1996 - Canadian broadcasters have shown again why they are among world leaders in attracting television audiences, shaping opinions and creating innovative marketing campaigns.

Competing against the world's best, Canadian stations won an impressive 22 medals - including 8 gold - at this month's prestigious PROMAX & Broadcast Designers' Association international competition, in Los Angeles.

Honoring creativity in broadcasting promotion, marketing and design, the competition attracted more than 4000 BDA entries from 15 countries and another 4000 PROMAX entries from 22 countries.

CHEK-TV, Victoria emerged tops overall with 4 gold and 2 silver PROMAX medals, including both the gold and silver in both the 'Promotional Animation' and 'In-House Generic TV Announcement' categories. It also won a BDA bronze for Promos or IDs over 10 seconds.

CICT-TV, Calgary followed with five PROMAX medals, three gold and two silver, including both top spots in the 'Outdoor/Transit Advertisement' category for Lois & Clark and the X-Files.

ITV, Edmonton won PROMAX gold and silver for its 'ITV Superbus' outdoor transit ad and the campaign, 'It's Ours - Chicken, Skeet Golf, Biker'.

U.TV, Vancouver snagged three PROMAX silver medals, two for 'In-House Generic Announcements' and one for its 'Where the Surfing Stops' campaign. CITY-TV, Toronto won one silver PROMAX and two BDA bronze. Other silver PROMAX medalists were CFCF-TV, Montreal and BCTV, Vancouver.

A major TV session entitled Around the World in 30 Seconds was chaired by Mary Powers, CITY-TV, Toronto's Director of Communications and Promotion and Chair, PROMAX International Committee. The international panel also featured Barry Close, Manager, Marketing and Promotions, CFRN-TV, Edmonton, who represented 'The Best of Canada' to the world.

Canadian participants in key radio sessions included Craig Mills, Sales Promotion Coordinator, CHEZ-FM, Ottawa; Gail O'Reilly, Marketing Manager, CHQR, Calgary; Donna Whalley, Promotions Director, CKBD/CJJR-FM, Vancouver; and David Schutte, Promotions Director, CFMO-FM, Smiths Falls/CHEZ-FM, Ottawa.

Winners and participants are members of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB), which represents the vast majority of Canada's local serving, advertising-supported television and radio broadcasters.
